As promised....notes from my presentation. I was very nervous but got through it with only a few tears and they were all from me.
Hi, I am Mel McEvoy. I’ll tell you a little about myself my passions are many, family and friends, art in all its forms, nature, gardening, dancing, cooking and eating or eating deliciously cooked dishes. Adam and I have 2 children, Ronan 6 and Lily 4. We made the move from Brisbane to Mitchell when Ronan was just a baby and we wanted to give him and us a better life.
Well that’s not quite how it all started; it all started with Adam talking about buying this business in Mitchell. Mitchell I said, where is that? Add many more discussions, spreadsheets, trips to the banks and Ads said, why don’t we just go for a drive, take a long weekend break and go out and see this town. We chose a long weekend public holiday and after the 7 hours drive, with baby screaming in back for a majority of the trip, many “are we there yet?” calls from the passenger seat, we arrived in Mitchell. (i’d never been past Toowoomba, had lived in cities for a majority of my life, spent a couple of years in London and had never seen road kill by the hundreds like there was that year) Ok so public holiday, the peak of the drought 2003, rolly pollies blowing across main street, deserted main street. No shops open, No green grass to speak of, no nice gardens to admire, no people to even talk to, it was like a ghost town so when I said to Ads to quote, there is no way in the world that I will ever live in Mitchell I wasn’t joking and for anyone that knows Ads you will know that this did not deter him one little bit, needless to say he cast his spell over me and here I am to tell the story.
If I knew then what I know now, we would have been here quite a bit earlier. It’s going on 6 years now and over time I have realized that this was one of the best decisions we could have made. I love living in Mitchell, for me living in Rural Queensland represents many things, great friendships that will last a lifetime, my family are happier than I believe we would have been elsewhere, it’s real hear and I like it. Also opportunity, if you want it there is abundant opportunity.
And a sense of community I have never before experienced,
I am involved in the Mitchell community I am the Secretary for Mitchell Little Athletics, the Catering Officer for Mitchell Amateur Swim club, my kids are involved in Wots on Gymnastics and Mitchell Dance West Dance School, I regularly help out at the school with reading and outings, and for me I am involved in the Mitchell on Maranoa gallery as a Friend of the Gallery. I also join in the Adult jazz classes with our eldest member being 52, we are quite a bunch. I just love what my kids get from these activities not just the ones that they do but also that they get to see me participate as well. Without help from community members almost none of these activities would be available to our young.
Our businesses are Nutri-Lick and Norprim, Nutri Lick provides Livestock Feed Supplements and Norprim is a device that injects medication into the water supply for stock.
Both of our businesses rely largely on climate in two ways
Locally
Firstly if it is too hot for too long with out rain grazers have not enough feed to keep the cattle going so they sell and are no longer in need of supplementing. If it is too wet then the grazers may not supplement there stock at all. Our business is like riding on a roller coaster from one week to the next.
Oversees
The other side of the coin is that it is not just the climate here that impacts our business but also that of overseas where some of our raw materials are sourced, extreme weather can really damage the supply of some of these items which in turn impacts the cost both to us and to our customers.
Adam is passionate about nutrilick and Norprim but to help us smooth out the peaks and troughs we are pursuing additional business opportunities as a means of diversifying.
I am passionate about design it has always captivated me.
Whether it be in a building designed to give its occupants space to relax, reflect and be inspired.
A home that is a sanctuary for a family designed to bring them together and enhance there lives, through colour, texture, light and air.
A chair that says come and sits on me, snuggle into a good book, one that you chose because the design on the front cover was appealing,
Or something as small as a well designed tea pot – it may sound silly but I have my favorite, the one that pours just perfectly.
So I have started a course in Interior Design with the Sydney based Interior Design Academy and when I have finished I will start my own Interior design Studio “Things on Walls Design” I want to make interior design accessible through:
One on one consultation, specifying for people building new homes
Revamping existing homes for families
Providing a remote online service to those who I cannot get to and who cannot get to me.
And in the future Interior Design Workshops on say colour or “the perfect home office” for locals and visitors, which I see will help promote Mitchell and create another reason to visit our lovely town and use our many services on offer.
I have started my Blogg at thingsonwallsdesign.blogspot.com and I invite you to visit me there and join me on my adventure.
